Sports Premium Funding Initiative

The Department for Education has confirmed that the Primary PE and Sport Premium will continue for the 2025–26 academic year, with £320 million allocated nationally to support improvements in physical education, sport and physical activity for children in primary schools in England.

Funding is calculated based on the number of pupils in Years 1–6, using data from the school census:

  • Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £1,000 per pupil

  • Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil
This follows the same formula used in previous years.

Funding is paid in two instalments during the academic year- typically in Autumn 2025 and Spring 2026 — to support effective planning and spending.

Purpose of the Funding

Schools must use the PE and Sport Premium to:

  • support all children to live healthy, active lives

  • make participation in PE and school sport easier and more enjoyable

  • ensure high-quality physical activity opportunities for all pupils

  • embed sustainable improvements in PE provision and sport opportunities across the school

How Schools Can Spend the Funding

The Department for Education suggests that effective use of the PE and Sport Premium should focus on 5 key areas:

  • increasing teacher confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport

  • increasing pupil engagement in regular physical activity

  • raising the profile and impact of PE and sport across the school

  • offering a broader, more inclusive range of physical activities for all pupils

  • increasing participation in competitive sport

  •

Examples of what the funding can be used for include:

  • Professional development (CPD) for teaching staff

  • Specialist coaching and mentoring to build internal capacity

  • Extra-curricular clubs and extended activity sessions

  • Targeted support for less active or disadvantaged pupils

  • Inter-school competitions, festivals, and sporting events

  • Resources and equipment to enhance activity provision

Schools should use the funding in the academic year it is allocated and cannot roll unused funds into future years.
